Overview

The Heroic Journey of Learning

This monument symbolizes and personifies the philanthropic legacy of a great Guatemalan citizen, Engineer Juan Niemann Enge. The vision represented is that of a heroic young Guatemalan who, from childhood, educates himself fully, dreams of achieving his most cherished aspirations, and pursues education as the path to the most sublime happiness—fulfilling our values through the practice of worthy virtues. The hope is that one day we may have the immense pride of giving back to Guatemala, our homeland, a seed that will germinate into growth and improvement for our lives and for all Guatemalans. The 14 values and virtues, abstracted in the 14 books, are learned through a proper education. The first and most important institution is the Family, the foundation and root of a tree with a solid and upright trunk, from which spring essential values for life: respect, rectitude, and responsibility. Integrity—loyalty to one’s principles—is also learned at home, as is self-confidence, fostered through healthy self-esteem and the example, validation, and love of parents. The second institution is the School, which reinforces the importance of a comprehensive education grounded in basic and general knowledge. The Quetzal-1 satellite, created by UVG students and placed in the figure’s right hand, completes the virtuous circle of education that transcends. This artifact symbolizes the fundamental role of higher education, such as that of UVG, and the crucial contribution of science and technology to the flourishing of every individual. This sculptural monument was cast in lost-wax bronze on a marble-block base of books. It measures 3.5 meters in total height and is located in Juan Niemann Plaza, on the terrace of Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, in the capital city. It was inaugurated in July 2025.
